New England Lightning District
Summer 2005 District Meeting

The New England Lightning District 2005 Summer Meeting was held in conjunction with the District Championships at Massabesic Yacht Club. The meeting was called to order by Commodore Bill Fastiggi at 11:30 AM on Saturday July 9, 2005.

The following fleets were represented and constituted a quorum:
121 Newburyport
145 Lake Spofford
189 Marblehead
227 Lake Bomoseen
273 Lake Massabesic
301 Mallett’s Bay
493 Bow Lake

A motion was made and seconded to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the last meeting. Approval was unanimous.

Bill Fastiggi presented the District Women’s Championship trophy to Shelley Hughes. The Master’s trophy is lost (please find it if you are the Master who has it!) but it would have been presented to the Master’s Champion John Hughes.

Old Business

Bill Fastiggi has the forms for going to the North American Championships. There should be no problem qualifying as we will be able to send 8 or 9 boats (depending on how many new members signed up today) and a show of hands indicated only about 5 or 6 boats that wanted to go.

Attendance at District regattas so far this year has been pretty good. MBYC Spring Regatta had 22 boats, Lake Spofford had 9 boats and the Districts have 23.

We would like to continue the practice of having a “winner’s roast” after sailing. This can be formal or informal, but includes a chalk talk and/or a question and answer session where the skippers of the top couple of boats help everyone else understand what they did to be successful and why.

New Business

The schedule for the remaining district regattas for 2005 is:
August 20-21 Brian Hughes Leukemia Cup Regatta, Newburyport, MA
August 27-28 Squam Lake, Holderness, NH
September 10-11 Lake Massabesic, Manchester, NH
September 24 Ed Hinds Memorial One Day Lightning Flash, Bow Lake, Strafford, NH
October 8-9, Leaf Peeper, Lake Champlain, Burlington, VT

The district web site http://www.lightningclass.net/ne/ includes an email section - please use it! Add your name and your crew names to it and use it to announce regattas, to look for crew, etc.

The treasurer reported more than $1000 in available funds, including $410 in district dues collected this summer. We’ll have a ½ page ad in the ILCA yearbook when it comes out and still need to pay for that.

Mark Gardner motioned that we donate $500 to the Brian Hughes Leukemia Cup regatta. Walter Colantuono seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

There being no further business, Walter Colantuono motioned to adjourn, Sterling Bush seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. Meeting was adjourned at 11:45 AM July 9, 2005.

Respectfully submitted,
Bill Fastiggi, NE District Commodore
Bob Shapiro, NE District Secretary/Treasurer
