WORLD'S LARGEST LIGHTNING FLEET, PONTIAC YACHT CLUB, TO HOST OPEN HOUSE ON JUNE 4th

CASS LAKE / ORCHARD LAKE VILLAGE, MI - May 11, 2006 - Pontiac Yacht Club, home of the world's largest Lightning fleet, is pleased to announce that this year's Open House will be held on Sunday, June 4th from 1 – 3PM.

“We are excited to open our doors to the public again this year.  Although, we are the largest Lightning fleet in the World, some still say that we are the best kept secret in Oakland County," said John Garrison, Commodore (President) of Pontiac Yacht Club.  “We want people who want to learn how to sail or people that already sail to be aware of the opportunities that exist here at Pontiac Yacht Club."

"With gas prices on the rise, this is also an excellent opportunity for those with powerboats to switch to a more economical resource; the wind," added Eric Heller, Open House Chairperson and former Commodore.

The event starts at 1PM on Sunday, June 4th and finishes at 3PM.  There will be a Learn to Sail seminar at 1:30PM.  In addition, there will be sailboat rides (weather permitting), static sailboat displays, adult and junior instructional sailing program / membership information, and refreshments.  The club is located at 3270 Wards Point Dr. in Orchard Lake Village (neighboring Keego Harbor), just off Orchard Lake Rd between Commerce Rd and Cass Lake Rd.

PYC Race Committee Flashes

By Dick Beaubien, Fleet Captain Hank Borchardt has volunteered to help make our races better this year (details). He has been to sailing school this winter, learning the latest in good race committee practices, and he will be sharing this knowledge in two special schools at his house. The first will be April 1 at 10 am, and the second will be April 8 at 10 am. All skippers are encouraged to attend one of these three hour adventures in better racing. Contact Hank at (248)738-1607 to let him know you are planning to attend.

As is our practice, all skippers are required to run races on one Sunday and one Wednesday night during the season. Please sign up early. Races for the Spring series will not start until all of the races in the series have assigned race committees. Skippers who have not signed up for race committee duty will not be scored. Ed Dziuba has sign up sheets waiting for your autograph. Hank Borchardt plans to serve as a roving mentor aboard race committee vessels to keep the races on track.

We will be looking for ways to get better compliance with the racing rules on the course. There are no referees out there, so we depend on your knowledge of the rules and your sportsmanship. Enjoy the breeze, sail fast, and have a good time out there!

Club Dues

From the Treasurer (Salo Korn): Unfortunately, rising costs have required the Board of Directors to raise yacht club fees in order to balance our budget. The good news is that only fees have been raised and not dues so that those who use the club the most will be responsible for the costs. Both dry sail and dock fees have been raised $20 to $105 and $175 respectively. In addition, the penalty for missing a work party has also increased from $50 to $75. (Of course, if you come to the work parties or perform an alternative work assignment, this will have no affect on you.) Finally, a few members have been significantly late in paying the statements. Therefore, a late fee of $25 will be assessed to anyone who pays a statement more than 30 days after payment is due. When you receive your dues statement, there will be the usual information sheet. Please check the current directory and use this sheet to correct any errors. Also, please indicate if you are willing to receive E-TellTales rather than paper versions and make sure your email address is provided. Finally, in case anyone is interested, there are dock slips available.

Commodore's Corners

by John Garrison PYC Commodore - 2006

April 2006

I just got back from the St. Petersburg leg of the Southern Circuit. Mike Hecker and I crewed for Bruce Finsilver. It was Bruce’s and Mike’s first times at the circuit. I rolled into town late Thursday, and led Bruce and Mike to a dimly remembered restaurant. One after another, PYC boats crews showed up. My impression is that we had 5 crews and parts of several others at St. Pete. I think 15 people showed up at our tables that night. What a great evening. The racing was pretty much all light air. After the first race, Mark Allen was in Second!!, Charlie Hess was in Fourth!!!, and Sean Fidler close behind. After that, it went down hill. The last race was “marked” by a colossal pile up at the leeward finish line as 30 boats tried to fit. Didn’t work. What a great way to start the season. Since it was very light air, the damage was limited to the tempers of the participants.

This is the last news letter before the “Docks in” Saturday, April 22, followed by “Hoists in” for hoist owners the next Sunday, April 30. This is a working club. It is our expectation that everyone helps with these activities. Many hands make light work. If you cannot be there for Docks In, then come the weekend before, and you will find a crew putting the pipes in early. Call Bill Sanders and arrange for an alternate work assignment. Hire someone to take your place. There are several young, strong teenaged offspring that are thirsting for your $s. We need your participation.

Racing will commence with the “Bug out” following the Docks In Sunday. Come and have fun. It will not be scored. We usually try to get several starts in. The regular Wednesday series will start the following Wednesday. Racing in the spring is great if you dress the part. The winds are good, and the light lasts. If you have an event that you want to get on the calendar, call Tom Crosby, our Rear Commodore. Our days are filling up. The Months of June and July are very busy with the racing, Monday night small boat racing, adult and junior instruction, and various club functions. There will be two junior regattas, and two Laser regattas this year.

There are several open slips on the dock. The fee for this is one of the best deals in town. These openings can’t last. If you are a new member, moving out to the dock is a great way to meet people. The crews to either side of my boat on the outer T became some of my best sailing buddies. I highly recommend it.

March 2006

Hi, everyone, welcome to PYC for 2006.

One of the great things about our board of directors system is that you get to see the way things work for several years before you actually have to take responsibility. I’m here to tell you that this year looks great. You can just see it gelling.

We have a new care taker. His name is Stuart Martin. You will see him around caring for the place. Please stop and introduce yourselves. He is a great guy, and we want him to stay for years to come.

Sailing instruction is going to have a terrific year. Juniors are going to have four new/used Flying Juniors (FJs) for instruction in addition to the fleet that they have been building. We are going to have great instructors, and I’m sure that the classes will be full. Adult instruction is well organized, and that is the key.

Monday night racing is going to have 8 dates this year starting in June. The juniors will be out there learning to race, along with the windsurfing crowd. If you have a small boat, come on out and give it a try.

Lightning racing will be changing somewhat. Hank Borchardt will be taking a US Sailing course in Race Management in Virginia. He will be on the committee boats a lot this year trying to standardize how the committees operate. There will be beer and pizza parties about twice per month, organized by Tom Crosby.

There will be a new club sign out on Orchard Lake road. We are planning on having a banner across Orchard Lake road for the open house that Eric Heller organizes so well.

The spring work party will be a little earlier this year on April 22/23. Please look at the calendar and plan to attend. If you are going to have an issue with the weekend, come earlier in the week and help us put in the steel uprights. In any case plan something as the fines for not attending have been increased.

Joyce and the grounds committee have arranged for three new trees that will be planted by the city to replace the Ashes that were cut down. They should be planted right after docks are in and once the hoists are back in the water and out of the way.

Hank Borchardt and the Planning Committee will be asking the membership what things/activities could be improved or offered. Please give that some thought. They will be collecting the answers and I’m sure something new and good will come of it.

We are thinking about installing high speed internet with a wireless router for the club. This would allow us to asses the weather if it looks bad, as well as offer additional services to our members.

Please E mail me (Garrison@llproducts.com) if you have any questions or suggestions.
