What is Fleet 50?
We are Fleet 50 of the International Lightning Class Association. We are affiliated with the Potomac River Sailing Association (PRSA) and we sail on the Potomac River out of the Washington Sailing Marina just south of Reagan National Airport. We currently have about 35 active and semi-active boats. Our racing schedule runs from the end of March through the first weekend of November each year. The racing season includes a seven week Sunday Spring and Fall series, and a 12 week Wednesday night summer series. In addition there is the Potomac Cup in early May, the Memorial Day regatta, and the Leukemia/Presidents cup in September. The Lightning class is the longest operating and best organized one-design sailing class in the world. More than 15,000 hulls have been built for 130 fleets across the United States and in 17 different countries. Normally sailed with a crew of three, the Lightning is the place to hone your one-design racing skills. A Lightning will provide you the highest level of competition and skill development at minimal cost. Established in 1943, Fleet 50 is proud to carry on the tradition of the Lightning as the longest enduring, most competitive and fun one-design racing class in the Washington DC metro area.
