Frank on Savannah 2007Frank's perspective of races in Savannah........
There was a huge fleet....57 boats....all the biggies....
Saturday, it was honking pretty well....fairly short starting line....we were
fairly conservative...it was easy to get in the 2nd or 3rd row quickly, and
very difficult to dig out... the weather mark was tucked into a corner up one
of the three rivers and as soon as you rounded and put up the bag you were by
the lee and against a shoreline....as soon as you got that sorted out, you
were trying to cut a corner to go back to the starting line area for the
leeward mark...a boat or two flipped cutting the corner too tight with the bag
up...then you were back to the leeward mark with all the leaders coming back
at you.....3 laps of this......nelson did a great job driving, especially
downwind with the bag up in heavy traffic...
Dillard was a little faster in the 1st race....driving off more than we did...and finished 38th or so...beating us by 5 or 6....
The 2nd race was very similar to the 1st...we did a little better but let Jim
nip us just before the finish....Jim was 35 or so....we were right behind
him...I think we were 43rd overall, and Jim was 38th or so......we were pretty
well wiped out...
had a great party with great food...especially the unlimited oyster line....we
ate well then went back to the hotel and crashed early...
Sunday was very light...we put boats in the water un delay......some started
pulling boat out and taking sticks down.... then a little wind came in and
they took down the postponement, so sticks went back up and boat were back in
the water....then it died again...so they cancelled all...everyone packed up
and headed to Miami....we had a nice night exploring savannah, then headed
home
