Remembering the 2006 Frigid DigitBy Frank Gallagher Frigid digit… Boat show weekend so I got there early to get a parking place at the club. Rigged up -- registered--- sailed out to the starting line…40 something boats going with us… I had Andrew McKechnie and Paul Maher on Saturday ……….and Andrew and Tim Olson on Sunday. It got windy on the way out, so we put our foulies on… 1st race….W/L…5 legs…Winds 15-18 MPH…puffs a little higher…fairly wavy…we guessed left….we guessed wrong…good speed…middle of the fleet...dropped more on the 5th leg...lots of 15-20 degree shifts…with occasional 5-10 knot holes… 2nd race …same a little puffier…middle of the fleet again….when sailing dead downwind, a big lifter puff with a big wave just rolled us to weather before we could correct…Paul got to the board 1st….we saw Nabeel had gone over on the same wind/wave combo about 50 yards away…we were slow getting up then found we had bent a spreader … 3rd race…missing some mast blocks and a bent spreader got us to the weather mark almost last…so we retired, fearing the spreader would collapse and break the mast… Went in, got a real warm shower, pulled the stick down and straightened the spreader, put the stick back up and had a few beers and ate a real good dinner. Andrew and Paul went home, John Butler and Diane offered me a spot in Diane's new condo so I borrowed a sleeping bag …I was out by 9pm… Sunday…Tim is on with Andrew…we sail out to the line….much better…12-15 MPH.…beautiful! 4th race…I pick the wrong side again…finish about 30th…decent speed…Jody Swanson was back with us for a long time…then started picking the shifts well and finished 4th….wow…!!! 5th race…finally got a little smarter…finish about 15th..Our best by far… Jody was 1st…Allen Terhune was 2nd…. We probably tried to sail up the middle too much and tacked too much…looks like the leaders generally picked a side and stayed out of the middle… We had decent speed and very good crew work all weekend…I just did a poor job figuring out which side was favored… Lots of fun….great sailing…
