2005 Borderline Regatta
Kerr Lake North Carolina
October 22 - 23 2005
By Bob Astrove
Nabeel, Pat and myself comprised our three boat
fleet 50 contingency at the Borderline Regatta near Henderson North
Carolina this past weekend. Also joining the 24 boat fleet were a couple
of former fleet 50 members, Dave Pyle now from Wilmington and Ron Buchanan
from Richmond.
As always, the
regatta was well run, great fun, in the most beautiful of settings on Kerr
Lake, as the leaves begin to turn. The sailing was good, in mostly 5 to
8 mph breezes. And despite our Potomac River experience in shifty winds I
think I can speak for Nabeel and Pat in saying that understanding the
shifts and avoiding the holes was extremely challenging.
Allan Turhune won the
regatta with outstanding finishes of 2,3,1,2. Second went to Bob
Harkrider (9,1,2,4), and third was Bill Fastiggi (3,2,11,3).
Our local fleet boats
didn’t fare so well (remember I said it was challenging!) Nabeel with
Scott and Lisbet finished 11th with 50 points (6,9,15,20).
Pat, along with Paul and Craig finished 15th with 59
(14,11,19,15). And yours truly with former fleet 50 members Doug Dixon
and his daughter Caroline and wife Gina swapping days finished 17th
w’ 63 (19,19,7,18).
As always we had the
only Woody in the fleet, but even with the low hull number and a very
exciting 7th in the third race, we were only good enough to
finish second in the hull number handicap scoring.
Silver wise there was
something to cheer about with Nabeel taking third in the combined Frigid
Digit / Borderline series.
Okay, us fleet 50
folks have a little work to do figuring that place out, But it is a
beautiful setting, and a fun regatta. It is only 4 hours away and I’d
encourage everyone in fleet 50 to make the trip next year.
