Although potentially severe thunderstorms were predicted for Saturday, they never materialized, and we had great sailing in 8 - 12 MPH southeasterly breezes under overcast skies.  On Sunday it was even better, sunny with good, if gusty 15 - 20 MPH winds from the northwest.  Jeff Storck headed a race committee of highly skilled PRSA skippers, including Frank Gallagher, Bobby Astrove, Red Fehrle,  Rob Tompkins, Cathy Bleakly,  Latane Montague and Bill Kleysteuber, who showed us how a regatta should be run.

Kudos to all who made this regatta a success, including all the participants; our sponsor Heinekens;  and the members of the Regatta Organizing Committee:

  • Jeff Storck and the Race Committee;
  • Cathy Bleakly, Pat McGee and Jeff Storck for scoring;
  • Jim Dillard for lining up the park; the ABC permit; the sponsor; the beverages; and the ice, and getting it all down to Leesylvania;
  • Drew Hudson for etching inscriptions on our beautiful trophies;
  • Barb Thompson and Catherine Calvin for planning and serving our signature filet and salmon dinner on Saturday and the hot dog lunch on Sunday
  • Nabeel Alsalam for lining up the powerboats, locating and bringing the RC equipment (anchors, marks, flags, radios), serving as a roving ambassador, helping with masts, and transporting crew from McLean and Arlington down to Leesylvania and back again;
  • Todd Johnson for agreeing to organize a jury to hear protests;
  • Joe Kimak for writing more than 500 individually-personalized invitation emails to Lightning skippers in eastern seaboard fleets;
  • Marian Bruno and Gary Roberts for organizing and conducting registration and for providing Saturday and Sunday breakfast;
  • Frank and Maryann Gallagher for making bag lunches;
  • Steve Gregg and Catherine Calvin for researching options on memorabilia other than T-shirts
  • Jeff Storck for ordering the Koozie coolers and getting them delivered;
  • Rob Tompkins for photography; for transporting the charcoal grill from and back to the rental place; and especially for providing his boat to Chandler Owen;
  • Joe Anderson for serving as the point of contact for out-of-town skippers needing housing;
  • Peter Grimes, for hosting guest skipper Joe Anderson on Peter's newly-acquired 14019;
  • Joe Warren for serving as crew matchmaker, delighting several new crew and out-of-town skippers in the process;
  • Rick Welch for doing most of the grilling on Saturday evening
  • All who contributed hors d'oeuvres and desserts for the Saturday dinner
  • All who provided housing to out-of-town skippers
