NOTICE OF REGATTA
2008 Lightning Class Dixie District Championship Regatta Severn Sailing Association and Fleet 329 Annapolis, MD June 14th-15th, 2008 LOCATION: The regatta is to be held on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River and is being hosted by the Severn Sailing Association and Lightning Fleet 329. Severn Sailing Association, located in Annapolis Maryland is about one hour from Washington and 3 hours from Richmond, VA. and about one hour and fifteen minutes from Havre de Grace. NOTICE OF REGATTA: These races will be governed by the ‘rules’ as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008. The races are open to all Lightnings registered with the International Lightning Class Association (ILCA) and with a membership in the Dixie District. This regatta will serve as a qualifying regatta for the Lightning North American Championships to be held at Newport, RI from August 8-13th, 2008. Skippers and crew must be members of the International Lightning Class Association. Additional rules governing eligibility and participation shall be as defined in the ILCA Rules Governing All Lightning Class District Championships. All boats will be required to have matching sail numbers on all main and spinnaker sails used in the regatta. The Dixie District Championship is scheduled as a six race series. One race will constitute a series. If six races are completed, a single throwout will be granted. As a qualifying regatta under the RRS 70.4(a), scoring will be final and decisions of the protest committee will not be subject to appeal. Scoring will be conducted according to the Class rules governing Championship regattas. Radio Communication. Use of hand held VHF radios will be permitted for communication from the Race Committee to competitors on a predetermined channel to be identified in the Sailing Instructions. The Race Committee intends to use VHF radio to identify OCS (On Course Side of the line) boats after starts and otherwise communicate with the fleet on the water. Failure to receive a hail, for a hail to be made, the order of hails made, or receive other communications to the fleet shall not be cause for redress. Other use of any communication devise is prohibited and such use shall require withdrawal from the race unless determined by the Race Committee to have been for emergency purposes. REGISTRATION: Fee: $95 Includes: Breakfast Saturday and Sunday. Saturday evening hors d’oeuvres, dinner and awards for the top five finishers. Payment by cash or check only. Checks payable to Lightning Fleet 329. Extra Dinners are available for $12 per person. Please visit our website to add your name to the Competitors List to assist us in planning this regatta. Awards following last race at the SSA Clubhouse. DIRECTIONS: Route 50 to Severn Sailing Association • Start Address: Route 50, Annapolis, MD 21403 • End Address: 311 First Street, Annapolis, MD 21403 • Distance: 3 miles • Directions: Take US Route 50 to Exit 24, Rowe Blvd (MD 70). Bear right onto Rowe Blvd. Cross Weems Creek and College Creek. Continue on Rowe Blvd as it bears right after College Creek. At Church Circle you must turn right - continue about 180 degrees around Church Circle to Duke of Gloucester Street - the Maryland Inn is on the corner of that intersection - turn right. Follow Duke of Gloucester Street and turn right at end. Cross Spa Creek Bridge and take the first left onto Severn Ave. (Shell Station). Go 5 blocks; turn left onto First Street. SSA is at the end of the street on the right. -OR, Alternate route to avoid downtown- -Route 50, take MD 665, Aris T Allen Boulevard (exit 22) -follow Aris T Allen Boulevard to end; turns into Forest Drive east, continue straight -pass Safeway Grocery store on right -take left at 2nd light past Safeway onto Hilltop (can only make left turn) -through intersection with convenient store on left -take left onto Bay Ridge Ave -follow all the way into Eastport, across 6th St. -left on 1st St. ACCOMMODATIONS: Due to large Lacrosse Tournament the same weekend as our Districts, we have been unable to reserve a block of rooms at any of the local hotels. Discussion: The requirement for membership in the Dixie District has been removed from paragraph 3 sentence 2. However, only for Dixie District members does this regatta serve as a qualifying regatta to the North American Championships per ILCA rules.
